Scientific Epertise and Advocacy

For more than 40 years Dr. Cole has provided scientific expertise to a wide range of clients including companies, attorneys, government agencies, and national, state, and local environmental organizations in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. One of his specialties is to help corporations assess and promote innovative technologies that prevent or reduce the adverse impacts of products currently in common use.

Dr. Cole was a senior scientist and section chief at U.S. EPA. Later, During the 1980’s, he was Science Director of Clean Water Action and played a principal role in support of an improved Superfund reauthorization and its enforcement at specific sites.

In 1993 Dr. Cole founded Henry S. Cole Environmental Associates, Inc to support and enhance its clients’ efforts to implement policies, laws, regulations, and specific actions aimed at protecting the environment, public health, and ecological resources. One of Dr. Cole’s specialties is to help corporations assess and promote innovative technologies that prevent or reduce the adverse impacts of products currently in common use.

Specific clients and projects include:

  • Safe Pressure Treated Wood Preservatives Chemical Specialties, Inc. Cole conducted an environmental assessment which demonstrated the environmental advantages of the company’s pressure-treated wood preservative—the first to be free of carcinogenic chromium and arsenic.
  • Cole was a consultant for Ecomat, a water-based alternative to PCE-based dry cleaning. Dr. Cole also conducted a forensic research project for the Allstate Insurance Company related to liability issues associated with dry cleaning contamination.
  • Philips Electronics: On behalf of Philips, Dr. Cole provided written testimony to California Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC); The report supported revising regulations to incentivize use of the fluorescent lamps with the lowest possible mercury content.
  • Glass Packaging Institute: Dr. Cole provided an environmental assessment demonstrating that many environmental advantages of glass containers over those made of plastic. Cole also conducted outreach to environmental groups warning of the growing threats of plastic wastes to the environment.
  • Church & Dwight (Arm & Hammer Products): An environmental assessment report demonstrating the advantages of concentrated detergents. Work involving Sustainability and Climate Change at the County Level.
